BLOG — AdWords Help — Understanding Ad Rank

ourdesk-google-help-understanding-ad-rank.jpg

Ad Rank — The Key To AdWords Campaign Success

There must be a million posts on just as many blog sites talking about every aspect and perspective of AdWords, and not so surprisingly, with more than a few contradicting each other. A critical aspect of any AdWords Campaign is Ad Rank, the value that's used to calculate your ad position on a SERP or Search Engine Results Page.

Understanding Ad Rank

Ad Rank is calculated using:

  • Your Bid Price
  • Quality Score - CTR or Click Through Rate
  • Quality Score - Ad Relevance
  • Quality Score - Landing Page Relevance
  • Quality Score - Ad Extensions and other
  • Quality Score - Ad Formating

Ad Rank calculates your ad position on the Search Engine Results Page with the key aspects being your bid price, the quality of your ads and website. Google evaluate these different aspects and gives you an Ad Rank score. So even if your competitor has a higher bid price than you, you can still secure a higher ad position on the Search Engine Results Page. Your Ad Rank is recalculated every time your ad is displayed, so your ad position can change each time depending on these variables for you and other advertisers at the time.

A well constructed AdWords Campaign takes into account not just the often talked about KeyWords, but all these aspects to ensure a successful campaign yielding great results and at an affordable click price.

BLOG — Will Blogging Really Help My SEO?

ourdesk-seo-help-for-small-business-blogging.jpg

Google Loves New Original Quality Content

So without re-writing all the content on your website (that's a larger SEO task) how can you give Google what it demands; new quality original content? Easy... write NEW, ORIGINAL QUALITY content and post it on your website blog!

Will Blogging Really Help My SEO?

Will Blogging really help my SEO on my small business website? Google loves fresh content and so do your own website visitors. A blog is a great way to push out new fresh content. This usually raises an immediate question: what to write about?

Think about your business and the every day events that occur. You can write about a customer case study, an event you recently attended or explain one of your products or services in detail.

If you do blog, make sure you place a link to the relevant page of your site where the reader can find the solution or call to action. For example, if you are blogging about the SEO Service that you offer with guaranteed results and no contracts, then you would put a link in the post pointing to the page on your website where the user can find more information about your SEO Service.

A new blog post creates a new page. The more pages your small business has on the internet, the more places people can find you. The more paths back to your website, the more searchers that can become customers.

If you are looking to improve your Google Ranking and would like to take a more comprehensive approach, you can view our SEO Services page.

ourdesk-seo-small-business-website-packages-pricing.jpg

A Website Without SEO is Like a Website Without Colour

Building a website without SEO is like a website without colour, actually worse, like building a house with no street access, power or phone line. Who will know it exists or even visit your site? A small business website without SEO actually makes a website rather pointless. It is generally accepted now that any small business that wants to grow or even survive needs a professional website. Well I would like to suggest that in 2016, all websites need SEO if they want to be found on Google. And let's face it, Google is THE tool of choice when it comes to locating a business to provide you with the product or service you seek.

SEO Now Included in All Website Packages

If I build a website for a small business, I feel I am letting them down if I don't include SEO. OURDESK small business website packages are strategically designed to convert visitors to customers, but the website must receive visitors to start with, if it is going to convert them to customers. Again, the answer is quality SEO. I feel that strongly about this, that I have updated all OURDESK Small Business Website Packages Pricing to include critical SEO elements to start building your Google presence. It's far more economical to include SEO at the website construction stage than after it's completed.

To Google AdWords or Not?

The new year is underway at OURDESK and I was looking at some ideas for a Google AdWords Campaign I am constructing for a new client to help them move their small business forward in 2016. In my search, I stumbled upon this quote from Henry Ford.  I found this interesting as it aligns with the concept of our AdWords Help Campaigns.  Over the past twelve months, we have constructed many new AdWords Campaigns which lead me to rebuilding our AdWords Help page on our website.  While I do not consider AdWords a fix-all for all small business growth, I do recommend potential new AdWords clients read our 5 Point Test — Can Google AdWords Help? on our Google AdWords Help page. If you can then answer yes to the 5 points raised, I think you have a genuine chance of benefiting from an AdWords Campaign to help you move forward this year.

3 Points to Effective Small Business Websites

Designing an effective website is easier said than done, yet is possible :)  Small businesses want to ensure their website is designed to perform as a marketing tool and not just be another boring template site on the internet.  Such sites are built with little understanding of the sales funnel concept and calls-to-action to help the conversion process. Your website can be a vital tool in your lead generation, moving site visitors towards a sales conversion.

1.  Simple

With just a few simple design truths you can create a more effective website. It is a truth that is now more commonly embraced among website designers and usability experts, yet is a truth that is often ignored.  So What is this Truth?  It is the truth that simple websites are better.

Google’s First Impression Study

Google’s famous first impression study found that a user judges the beauty of a website in 1/50th of a second. In that time, users rate visually complex websites as less beautiful. A visually complex website is one that has many competing elements that call cognitive attention or user interaction. They can include icons, banners images, logos, titles, headlines, text blocks, ads, menus, drop-downs, social plugins, warning messages, search boxes, forms, text links, and anything else that a developer conjures up or a business owner demands. As the renowned industrial designer Dieter Rams said: “Good design is as little design as possible”.

Simplicity will improve everything: aid usability, improve aesthetics and website loading time, and pleases the user.

  • Remove Extraneous Elements
  • Create More White Space
  • Below the Fold-line
  • Better Sameness

Eye-catching Images

People are visual and that means big, beautiful, quality image (optimised for faster loading of course) can grab their attention and convey a message more quickly than a big block of text they don't have time to read.

2.  Usable

The goal of a website is to make it usable. The word “usable” is obviously relating to the user and their experience.  So how do you make your homepage usable? For starters, you make it simpler. Usability and simplicity are correlated. Simpler websites are more effective, and effective websites work better. However, simply saying “make your homepage effective” isn’t all that tactical. Here are some actual ways that you can shape an effective homepage.

  • Know Your Goal
  • Consider Your Users Intent
  • Reduce Choice

3.  Action

The goal of your website should culminate in an action. You want users to do something: read an article, sign up for a free trial, download a resource or buy a product. Your homepage must serve this purpose. It is the start of the process of guiding them down the path to the action you want them to take… you must call for this action on your homepage. Many websites commit a tragic error when they leave off the call to action. This is a serious mistake! The homepage is the most visited page on your website. It is a page of utmost importance and critical conversion potential. Don’t waste it. How can you drive conversions on your homepage?

  • Use a prominent headline that calls for action
  • Make your USP (unique selling proposition) a clear part of your homepage
  • Feature a large CTA button above the fold-line on your homepage

The End Result is an Effective Website

Each of these elements are connected; Simplicity, Usability, and Action. A simple website is also a more effective website, and an effective website focuses on a single conversion action. Effective sites reduce choice, and reducing choice increases conversions.  Each one is related and dependant on the others. As a result, once you start to focus on the first element of a killer homepage, you are forced to deal with the rest.  Instead of being a cluttered placeholder for everything, your homepage is transformed into a powerful force to be reckoned with :)

BLOG — 5 Point Test for Google AdWords

OURDESK - 5 Point Test for google AdWords Help.jpg

Choosing who to marry... that life-partner, sure I agree that can be a bit tricky. Thankfully choosing if you should try Google AdWords to help promote your small business is certainly easier to answer — you just need to know the right questions to ask yourself. I had three new female clients contact me this week asking this question so I thought it time to post on the subject.

To Google AdWords or Not, That is the Question

If you have a new or even an established small business and are looking to grow, obviously Google Adwords is an option many consider. But is it a good decision? There is the setup cost if you want to engage some Google AdWords Help (think AdWords Manager) to ensure you set up the campaign correctly and get the maximum benefit for your spend dollars. Of course there is then those spend dollars each month.  So how do you know if its going to be worth employing an AdWords Company and trying an AdWords Campaign on your new small business website? Why not try answering these questions and then see what you think?

1.  Is Anyone Searching for Your Product?

If you are selling a "market-leading new gadget", the odds are low that people will be searching for your product on Google. Imagine being the marketing manager at Skype when it launched. What words could you buy on Google? If you have a new product, or simply sell something people don’t search for on Google, you will likely waste a lot of time / money on a google AdWords Campaign that will never get any clicks.  Perhaps its better to "not" than to "to".

2.  Are Your Economics as Good or Better Than Your Competitor?

AdWords determines which ads show up for a given search, based on an auction between advertisers. To simplify this, lets say you bid $1 and ten other advertisers bid $2 to $3, it is unlikely you will be able to have your ads displayed on page One of Google, and hence unlikely to get any clicks and visitors to your website. If your competitors sell the exact same product or service that you do, but make two times the margin on every sale, they will be able to outbid you.  If you have a better business structure, a healthy profit margin, perhaps lower costs, low overheads, fewer staff, or even a home office, then you can likely out bid them and you will receive the clicks and website visitors.

3.  Do You Understand Search Engine Marketing?

Search engine marketing is easy to do but hard to do well. If your plan is to read a "how-to" book on AdWords from the library and then launch your AdWords campaign, you will likely cost yourself a lot of money. There are many, many nuances to running an effective AdWords Campaign. If you don’t have someone on your team with years of expertise, you will have far more success and profit at the end of the day by engaging an experienced Google AdWords Company or AdWords Manager.

4.  Do You Have an Effective Conversion Funnel?

Having a great product and a terrible web site is like spending millions of dollars on an awesome State-of-Origin night TV Ad but leaving the doors locked at your store when customers show up. Success with AdWords requires a deliberately designed Sales Conversion Funnel website or Landing Page. The ad text, the page a consumer lands on and the checkout or form submission experience needs to give that consumer confidence that you are the right merchant for their needs. Not to be put off though, even if you have a website which is a little lacking, you can have a one page custom landing page built and attached to your website, and have your Google AdWords point to this sales landing page.

5: Do You Have a Good Offer?

If your competitors sell a blue gadget for $5 with free shipping and you sell that same product for $10 with $5 shipping, the best AdWords strategy in the world will not be successful. It is simply too easy to click on the next ad and comparison shop. Advertising on Google is no longer a secret. The odds are high that your competitors are already running AdWords campaigns. As a result, effectively competing on AdWords means that you need to at least be equal to, and hopefully better than, the competition. If your product and price is competitive then a trial on Google AdWords is likely a good idea.

To Google AdWords or Not

The points I have covered above are really just a "gut check" to determine how competitive your products and services are to your rivals.  Do you have the right margins?  The right marketing?  The right Web site?  The right offer?   If you can answer yes to all of these questions, not only will you have great success on AdWords, you’ll also have a superb business :)

BLOG — Is SEO for Small Business Still Necessary?

OURDESK - SEO for Small Business

It’s common knowledge that search engine optimisation has become more complex over the last few years. Google's algorithms are more advanced with semantic search to comprehend the users queries where as in the past, it would only view words and phrases. Now with Google’s latest search algorithms the process for optimising a website has again changed.

Original SEO

Just a few years ago, SEO for small business websites was mathematical, a more precise process, and required technical expertise to make the changes necessary to achieve improvements in the search engines results.

The original SEO process for small business websites was focused on logical website structure and well chosen keywords written into the website content. As a result, this generated a vast number of poor-quality content websites. Google evolved to favour websites that provided higher quality content which indirectly punished website that appeared to be almost spam-content engaging in manipulative, spam tactics. The good news is that SEO is no longer a keyword numbers game. Google's process for calculating quality site ranking has improved greatly, leading to high web rankings more directly.

Small Business Website SEO

In 2015, SEO is more about producing a high-quality user experience. What does this mean to the average small business website owner? Its all about building a foundation for an SEO campaign, using a combination of:

  • Onsite Content

Onsite [website] content is one of the most important factors for SEO, though keywords are still important. Your content needs to be plentiful, detailed, well written and appropriate for your industry. This means using your home and internal pages to accurately describe the course of your business. Another key is taking advantage of your website blog. Posting as often as possible with helpful, specific content. Posting new content on a weekly, if not on daily basis to start building your credibility with Google and other search engines.

  • Social Media

It’s also relatively easy to get involved on social media. Most businesses have already created their profiles on Facebook, Twitter and more recently GooglePlus. Once they have their business page they can start promoting their website content by posting links to their site. This will increase traffic and visibility, and most importantly, improve their website content’s authority in search engine analyses. It’s also important for businesses to communicate with their social followers directly; regular engagement and large followings are important social signals used to calculate rank.

  • Offsite [off website] Content and Authority Building

No SEO strategy is complete without a solid offsite strategy. Since link building is no longer about achieving a large number of back-links or just placing a series of target keywords, it’s necessary for business owners to devise a successful strategy. To get started with an offsite link building campaign, find a handful of blogs and forums related directly to your industry, and make relevant, on-topic posts with occasional links pointing back to relevant pages on your website. Guest blogging is another avenue to build authority on external sites, and can result in a mutually beneficial long-term relationship with any platforms you choose to partner with.

  • Online Reviews

Cultivating positive online reviews is another important and beneficial step in developing your SEO. You will first need to construct your business profiles on third party review sites like Yelp. Then incorporate these site links into your website and then provide the best level of service you can to your clients. The more genuine, positive reviews you have, the greater you’ll rank in the search results.

Take Action

Unfortunately, where most small businesses will fall short is right at this point… taking action. Too many simply can’t handle all these tasks. The sheer number of tasks necessary to build a prominent online position is overwhelming, and for those that do act, often they lack the expertise which then eventually compromises the efficiency of the entire campaign. The secret to making it actually happen is to work with an SEO Services Company that specialises in Small Businesses SEO and building a plan together. Each should have tasks they will complete, based on which tasks they feel capable to do and which they are better to outsource.

Drive Conversions From The Start

Let’s get to the heart of it. Why did you buy a small business website package, or have a website designer build your business site, why does it even exist? There must have been something you wanted to accomplish!

Here are ways to drive conversions on your homepage:

  • Use a prominent headline that calls for action
  • Make your USP (unique selling proposition) a clear part of your homepage
  • Feature a large CTA button above the fold-line on your homepage

In Conclusion

Each of these three elements are connected. Simplicity, Usability, and Action. A simple website is also a more effective website, and an effective website focuses on a single conversion action. Effective sites reduce choice, and reducing choice increases conversions. Creating greater effectiveness, by necessity, improves simplicity, which feeds again into a higher rate of conversions. Each one is related and dependant on the others. As a result, once you start to focus on the first element of a killer homepage, you are forced to deal with the rest.

Instead of being a cluttered placeholder for everything, your homepage is transformed into a powerful force to be reckoned with.
